Home renovation is an encyclopedia of folk horror stories and myths. It costs a fortune, turns the life of a family into a total hell and never ends. Many people think so. They see renovations as a wreck of normal life. But those who once decided to dive into the abyss of repair know that everything is not so scary. Moreover, if the budget does not allow making a turnkey apartment, many problems can be solved independently. Here is the list of repairs that you can do by yourself, and things that you should let the professionals do.
Do it yourself
You don’t need specific skills to upgrade walls. Primer, glue, wallpaper and paint are sold in any building hypermarket. A room of 20 sq. m can be renovated over the weekend. The main thing that is required of you is accuracy. It is imperative to remove the old wallpaper and then prime and plaster the surface as evenly as possible.
Modern flooring is ideal for DIY renovations. Any type of floor can be made by yourself if you have a guide. The easiest way is to roll out linoleum, but laying a laminate in a regular room is no more difficult than putting together a puzzle. Ideally, you need to remove the old floor, make a new flat screed, and provide sound-absorbing materials.
Any door in the apartment can be installed independently. It is more difficult than painting walls, but it can be done by any healthy person. The main thing is to correctly measure the width and height of the doorways before ordering the door and the slopes at the factory. The installation process itself is quite time-consuming, but not very complicated.
Work for professionals
Perfect flat floors are a dream. Naturally, any coating fits better on them. But pouring a floor with a concrete mixture is a complex technological process. You should not do it according to a tutorial on the Internet – the risk is too big. First, if you do not do the waterproofing well enough, everything will inevitably flow to the neighbours, and you will also have to pay for their repair. But there is also a more serious danger – not to calculate with the permissible pressure on the floors. Then your independence will become a threat to the whole house.
Plumbing and underfloor heating
Plumbing installation is one of the most expensive types of work, so many are tempted to save money and do everything themselves. But effectively turning the current tap every six months and making a competent water distribution in the bathroom is not the same thing. If carelessness is allowed during the installation of plumbing pipes and assemblies, something turns out to be badly screwed, carelessly welded, not designed for pressure drops, the case may end in a grandiose flood.
If you want to expand your home, add a terrace or a room – our advice is to contact a professional home additions builders. It’s a complex work and there is to place for improvisation. If you don’t want your terrace to fall on someone’s had, make sure to not build it on your own.
In no case try to install gas equipment yourself – stoves, ovens, water heaters! This is not just advice – such autonomy is officially strictly prohibited. A gas leak due to an installation error threatens not just financial losses or hassle, but fatal consequences for you and your neighbours.
If your budget does not allow you to hand over the whole renovation to experts, many problems can be solved independently. Of course, a team of professionals will cope faster and better, but there are moments where you can really save. Just make sure to be careful and do not exaggerate.
